Tony Ford's record-breaking 931 Football League appearances began with his Grimsby Town debut at 16 years old. The Grimsby-born midfielder first stepped out for the Mariners against Walsall in October 1975, launching a career that would define homegrown talent at Blundell Park for over a decade. He played for the club from 1975 to 1986, making 418 appearances and scoring 65 goals in all competitions during that first spell.

Ford was a key figure in two promotion-winning campaigns and the 1982 Football League Group Cup victory. His consistency was remarkable, featuring in all 42 league fixtures during the 1984/85 season. Supporters recognised his impact early, voting him Young Player of the Year in 1976 and Player of the Year in both 1984 and 1985. His most prolific scoring season came in 1978/79, when he netted 16 league goals.

Leaving and returning

He left for Stoke City in the summer of 1986 in a £35,000 transfer, following a brief loan at Sunderland. After 112 league games for Stoke, he moved to West Bromwich Albion in March 1989, adding another 114 appearances. Ford returned home to Grimsby Town in November 1991, aged 32, for a £50,000 fee. He played 68 more league games for the Mariners before departing in 1994, moving on to Scunthorpe United.

His playing career stretched into his forties, with spells at Mansfield Town and Rochdale. It was at Mansfield where he equalled and then broke the Football League outfield appearance record of 824 games, previously held by Terry Paine, in 1999. He finally retired after a final appearance against Torquay United in 2001 at the age of 42. Reflecting on the achievement, Ford said, "I’m not one for records, though now it’s there, it’s a good feeling."

He always cherished his roots. "It was great to actually be able to play for your home town club," Ford said. His legacy is one of durability and local pride, setting a standard for longevity that modern players can look to. The current Grimsby side, sitting 3rd in League Two with 13 points from seven games, carries that same connection to its community. They are on a solid run of form, unbeaten in five with two consecutive wins, including a 2-0 victory over Crawley Town last time out. The team's positive start, with a record of three wins and four draws, shows the kind of consistent application Ford exemplified throughout his record-setting career.
