Grimsby Town secured their play-off bound status after a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Tranmere Rovers in a tense League Two encounter at Prenton Park. The Mariners, already looking ahead to the play-offs, saw Justin Amaluzor's first-half strike cancelled out by Nathan Smith, as Tranmere clinched their League Two safety.
The visitors, Grimsby, had a golden opportunity to open the scoring early on when Andy Cook fired wide from the edge of the area in the fourth minute. Despite Tranmere's Charlie Whitaker also missing a close-range chance, it was Grimsby Town who broke the deadlock just before half-time. Justin Amaluzor raced onto a precise through ball from Kieran Green and fired high past Tranmere goalkeeper Marko Marosi.
Grimsby could have doubled their advantage immediately after the restart, but Amaluzor slid in and scooped the ball over from six yards, missing a clear chance. Tranmere Rovers then pushed for an equaliser, with Joe Ironside slipping when through on goal in the 62nd minute, failing to beat Grimsby's goalkeeper Jackson Smith.
Just two minutes later, Tranmere found their leveller. Nathan Smith rose highest to meet Charlie Whitaker's corner, heading home from close range to make it 1-1. The goal ignited a period of mounting tension both on and off the pitch as both teams battled for control in the closing stages of the League Two fixture.
Despite the late pressure, Tranmere Rovers held on for a crucial point, securing their League Two status by two points after rivals Harrogate conceded a late goal elsewhere. Grimsby Town, meanwhile, confirmed their play-off berth. Tranmere manager Pete Wild commented, "We've found a way to stay up," while Grimsby manager Artell stated, "We're there on merit" regarding their play-off qualification.
