Denver Hume retires at 28 after head injury - Grimsby Town

Former Grimsby Town full-back Denver Hume has released an emotional statement confirming his retirement from professional football at the age of 28. The difficult decision follows a life-threatening head injury he suffered last year while training with Fleetwood Town.

Hume, who once made 64 appearances for the Mariners during a year and a half spell at Blundell Park, suffered a fractured skull and a brain bleed after a collision during a training session in last October. Despite a long recovery process and a desire to return to the field, the former left-back accepted medical advice that a return to playing is no longer possible.

In his social media post, Hume noted that he never imagined writing such a message at 28. He reflected on the months spent since the injury trying to find a way back to the game he loves, only to come to terms with reality. He had a year remaining on his contract with Fleetwood, having joined them from Grimsby on a free transfer the previous summer.

Hume looked back on a career that began at Sunderland at age eight. He expressed pride in making 84 appearances for his boyhood club and earning a Championship debut. He also expressed deep gratitude to the clubs that helped him achieve his goals, mentioning his time spent representing Sunderland, Portsmouth, Grimsby, and Fleetwood.

A special mention was given to Grimsby Town, which the defender credited with helping him rediscover his passion for football after a difficult period at Portsmouth. During his single full season with the Mariners, Hume was instrumental, providing 14 assists from left-back across 48 appearances. He earned a place in the League Two Team of the Year for the 2024/25 campaign.

"A special mention to Grimsby Town, a club that helped me fall back in love with football again at a time when I really needed it," Hume said. He thanked the coaches, staff, teammates, and supporters who were part of his journey. He also acknowledged his family and girlfriend for their sacrifices through the highest and lowest moments of his career.

While his playing days are over, Hume looks forward to the next chapter beyond the sport. He remains grateful for the journey that shaped him, despite five different operations and numerous injuries he faced along the way.
